How to Choose the Right Diapers for Your Baby
How to choose the right diapers for a baby
Pregnancy isn't over yet, and caring mothers begin to puzzle over what clothes to buy for the future baby, in which cradle they will sleep under their mother's lullabies. But the most challenging question is which diapers to choose for the little one
Diapers significantly simplify a mother's daily routine, make baby care easier, and save time on laundry. But not all diapers are equally comfortable. Some of them can even lead to rashes and irritations. So it's essential to know how to choose the right diapers and how to use them to ensure your little one's comfort at all times
Diaper Features - What to Look for First
Of course, when choosing diapers, experienced moms primarily pay attention to the brand name. These diapers have been tested for years, so you can be confident that they will suit your baby. However, if the price of branded diapers is too high for you, you can always opt for something else based on the following characteristics
Absorbency
Leakage is a nightmare for every mom. Who wants the contents of the diaper to leak from all the gaps? It's an uncomfortable experience for both you and your baby. Moreover, leaks often lead to chafing, rashes, and irritations. High-quality diapers excel at absorbing moisture. Even in case of excessive content, an ill-fitting size, or sagging, they will keep the wetness inside.
Air Permeability and Softness
Newborn babies have a highly developed network of capillaries. You can think of their skin as breathing, which is delicate and sensitive. Any disruption of this process can result in minor irritations and rashes on your baby's skin. So, it's crucial to choose diapers made of breathable and soft materials. Also, remember that your baby should stay in a diaper for a maximum of 3-4 hours. Afterward, change it and apply a special rash cream. Allow your baby's skin to breathe for about 10 minutes before dressing them in a new diaper.
Elasticity
It's essential to consider the diaper's ability to stretch. Diapers should be elastic, which determines whether they'll fit comfortably on your baby's body or cause chafing and leave marks from elastic bands and fasteners.
Convenience
Another factor is convenience during crawling and walking. Ideal diapers should give the sensation of lightweight underwear, not hinder your baby's movements, and allow them to roll from side to side. Various diaper models with different types of fasteners are available, including elastic waistbands, adhesive strips, and pull-up pants. The model you choose will significantly impact the level of comfort and convenience for your little one.
Gender-Specific Design
Some manufacturers produce diapers with consideration for your baby's gender. This is beneficial since the distribution of moisture in boys and girls significantly differs. Some manufacturers have taken this into account and designed diapers even more reliable and comfortable. For boys, they have raised the adhesive tabs higher and increased the free edge in the front part to ensure proper circulation. You can also choose a 'unisex' style, where the absorption surface is distributed according to the physiological features of both genders.
How to Choose Diapers by Size
Choosing diapers based on a child's age would be misleading. We all have individual characteristics, and children of the same age can have different body types. That's why diaper manufacturers have categorized sizes based on a child's weight. You can easily find the labeling on the packaging. Most commonly, you'll see something like this:
- Micro or SSS.
This is the smallest size designed for premature babies and those born with a weight of 1-3 kg. Interestingly, not all manufacturers produce diapers in this size.
- Newborn or NB.
Some manufacturers may label this size as "1" or "SS." These diapers are for babies weighing 2-5 kg and are suitable for infants from birth to 3 months.
- Mini, size "2" or "S".
These diapers are a good fit for babies weighing 3-7 kilograms.
- Midi, size "3" or "M".
Purchase these diapers if your little one is 4-12 months old and weighs no more than 10 kg.
- Maxi, size "4" or "L".
For children aged 8-18 months or with a body weight of 9-18 kg.
- You can also find diapers in sizes "5" and "6" These are worn by children aged 3-7 years, with an average weight of 15-35 kg.
It's worth noting that the smaller the size you choose, the more diapers you'll get in a package. As children age, the frequency of urination decreases, so there's no need for a package of more than 20 diapers.
How to make sure you've chosen the right size?
Please note that comfort depends on many factors, but the size plays a significant role. Your baby will be comfortable if:
- The diaper fits snugly against the body and reaches the navel.
- The cuffs and elastic do not squeeze.
- The diaper does not constrict the body.
- No irritations appear during diaper changes.
- The baby's skin stays dry for up to 4 hours.
Choose a larger diaper size if:
- There is redness or rashes on the skin.
- The baby's buttocks are not fully covered.
- Red marks from cuffs and leg openings appear around the legs and on the tummy.
- The diaper is already full and begins to leak after a single use.
Advice from mothers
Of course, you will find the manufacturer's label indicating "hypoallergenic." However, there is no 100% guarantee that your baby's skin won't react to certain materials used in diapers. To avoid buying multiple packs, try purchasing one from each of the brands you're interested in at the pharmacy. Test them out in practice, and you will see which diaper is comfortable and suitable for your baby and which one might irritate their sensitive skin.
